The turmeric or Curcuma (Curcuma longa), also known as yellow ginger, saffron root(el), turmeric(el), Tumeric(el) or Curcuma, is a plant species within the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). It originates from South Asia and is widely cultivated in the tropics.
The rhizome is very similar to that of ginger, but is intensely yellow; the peeled rhizome is used fresh and dried as a spice and dye. It contains up to five percent of typical essential oils and up to three percent of the curcumin or its derivatives responsible for the yellow coloration. The rhizome stimulates digestion.
