Turmeric Health Benefits

Is Turmeric safe?

Turmeric is not only a tasty spice, but also a medicinal plant with many health-promoting properties. The dried root stock is used in natural medicine. If the manufacturer’s instructions are followed and over dosage is avoided when used internally for medicinal purposes, turmeric is considered very safe and easy to use. When used as directed, no risks, side effects or interactions are to be expected.

Possible side effects of turmeric

The main medicinal ingredient in the turmeric plant is curcumin, which is also responsible for the beautiful, rich yellow color. Outstanding in the curative effects of turmeric is its liver-protective effect, the general protective effect on the body cells against degeneration as well as anti-inflammatory properties that benefit vascular health.

Side effects are occasionally reported, especially when turmeric is used over a long period of time and in excessive doses.

Those who experience such side effects should either reduce the dose or take a break of several weeks. The side effects should then disappear after a short time. The most common side effects described in connection with taking turmeric concern the gastrointestinal tract.

Especially people with sensitive mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal tract may be prone to diarrhea, mild abdominal cramps or stomach problems when taking turmeric.

People suffering from severe liver diseases, for example, acute inflammation of the liver, inflammation of the gall bladder or gallstones, should temporarily not use turmeric as a spice or as a dietary supplement in excessive doses. So far, there is also a lack of sufficient knowledge about the use of turmeric in infants, pregnant women, or breastfeeding.
